I am having trouble using the formmail and CPanel's Form Mail clone. Why won't FormMail.cgi work?

These type of scripts are allowed, but there are restrictions in place on all servers so that these scripts are not abused by spammers. We have thus disabled access to the default named of these scripts, and have renamed the Formail Clone, found in CGI Center to FormMail-clone.cgi

You can rename your script so that it is NOT called any of the following:
formmail.cgi
formmail.pl
formmail.php
upper/lowercase variants of the above

The reason behind these restrictions is that it makes life a little more difficult for automated scanners which search out and abuse vunerable emailing scripts used for spamming purposes. Anything with the filenames above will not work on our server regardless of whether they exist or not.

We suggest a script at http://nms-cgi.sourceforge.net/scripts.shtml or using http://www.yourdomain.com/cgi-sys/FormMail-clone.cgi which is the renamed CPanel formmail script for preventing abuse.

Please note! We don't recomment using the formmail clone or any forms of web based form-to-email scripts where your email address is available to the public. This could lead to spammers finding and abusing your email address.

If you HAVE to use any of these scripts, we recommend the following approach:
  • Setup an alternative email address for this form to be used
  • Screen ALL incomming mail before downloading it to your PC - This can be done from the Webmail interface
  • Change the reciptient email address, and the email address used in the form from time to time.
  • Alternatively, you can use a PHP based form mail script which hides the recipient email address in the PHP script. You can find some @ http://www.hotscripts.com
